First Timers Booklet

We hope that your Samboree will be filled with fun activities, informative seminars, and interesting tours of the local community. Included in this booklet there are many things that will help you to get the most from your Samboree experience. Some of them you have already learned since you drove to the gate and met the Wagon master and the Parking crew. They are here to see that you are safely parked. Once parked you cannot move without one of the “Crew” to help you. This is for your safety as well as those around you. If you arrived after dark or during the program you were placed in a “holding area” and provided with electric. You will be moved to your permanent location the following morning. Please arrive with water tank and propane tanks full and your waste tanks empty. Dump stations will be available upon your departure. You will be parked in an area where electricity is available. Please bring an extra electric cord (12gauge or larger) with you. You will be parked as close to an electrical source as possible, but the supply is limited. Do not use any appliances that draw a large amount of electricity such as heaters, air conditioners, or microwaves. Set you refrigerator and water heater on propane, this will help to prevent a blackout of a large number of rigs.

Handicapped parking is available for those with a blue handicap tag and/or doctor’s letter for special needs. We will do our best to accommodate, but cannot guarantee that we meet all needs. You will not park with your chapter if you require handicapped parking. Your tow vehicle must be removed from your rig. This insures that fire lanes are not blocked.

The Ohio Good Sam has a staff of volunteers that are chosen by the State Director that work very hard to put this Samboree on for you. They wear golf shirts of a different color each day, and have “STAFF” on the back. During the evening program they are dressed in white with black shirts. We welcome any questions and comments you wish to make. Please introduce yourself to them and let them know if you are having a good time.

Host chapters also volunteer to help put on the Samboree. They can be seen doing many jobs such as parking, electrical, hospitality, registrations, security, miscellaneous, door prizes, games, popcorn and many other things to make the rally a success. We appreciate all their time and hard work. If you would like to help with a duty for the rally, please see the state director, we would love to work with you.

You received a small white card with a number and a program upon your arrival. This card is to be presented at Registration, please check your program for the time and location. You will receive a Goodie Bag, a door prize ticket, patches and meal tickets if you purchased a catered dinner, and the opportunity to pick up tour tickets for the following days activities. There will also be a nametag with a red ribbon to identify you as a first timer. Remember to wear it each day. The registration area is also the location to sign up for games, craft classes and other miscellaneous information. Scrapbooks of the past Samborees are left here for you to look at. If you would like to purchase a photo see Bill or Ginny Brinkman.

As a First Timer we have set aside a time to get to know you better. The program lists a meeting you can attend to learn more about the Ohio Good Sam, meet chapter presidents and ask questions you may have. Please plan to attend.

A program, map of the fairgrounds with the chapters listed, hospital and emergency phone numbers are posted at the entrance to each building.

In the Merchants area there are commercial vendors with many products and services to sell. Stop and see what they have to offer. This is also where you will find the Good Sam Store. The vendors hour are from 9:00-4:00 pm. You may purchase patches, clothing and other Good Sam merchandise. Make sure to stop in and say “Hi” to Betty.

Bring your door prize ticket you received at registration to all programs. Please write your name on it in case you lose it and on Sunday they will be collected at closing ceremonies on Sunday to draw door prizes. Door prizes are drawn often from the stage and you must have your ticket with you to win. You may win more than once, so don’t throw it away. Check your program for the time to pick up one small door prize in the commercial building. Everyone receives a small item to take home. If you purchase any goods or services in the community while attending the Samboree, save the receipt write your name on the back and place it in the basket in the stage area. Your receipt may be drawn for a prize.

Many events will be occurring during the week. Please check your programs to determine which activities you wish to participate in. You will have to choose because there may be more than one thing going on at the same time. There is something for everyone on the program. Don’t forget SAMGO. (Bingo) One dollar buys one card that plays 20 games. Please bring correct change. Also write your name on the back of your cards and deposit them into the container on the stage marked SAMGO when the games are over. We will be drawing door prizes from these cards.

There is no smoking in or near the buildings entrances or exits. Pets are not allowed in the buildings and must be on a leash at all times. You must always clean up after them.

No rockers or recliners, and high back chairs must sit on one side of the stage. The attendants helping with set up of chairs will help you determine which side is correct.

Emergencies sometimes occur during Samborees. Please let a staff members help you. If you experience an emergency during the night, please turn on your vehicles headlights and blow the horn three times. A security golf cart patrols the grounds during the night and they will come to you. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR RIG. If they are not there immediately, repeat the procedure. Remember the emergency phone numbers are listed on your program. When dialing 911 from a cell phone you may not be calling the LOCAL 911 service, so make sure you state your location, which is on the program, use the fairground name and county. One security member will stay with you and the other will go to the fairground gate and lead the EMS to your location.

We also have a chapter the Hammin Sams that monitor the weather 24 hours a day to insure that we are prepared if a storm should suddenly pop up.

It is our sincere desire that you have an enjoyable experience here at the Ohio Samboree. We look forward to seeing you back again and hope you bring a friend with you.
